Messaging Guidance
Adapted from National Voter Education Week
Why is voter education vital to a thriving democracy?
Voter education is an essential component of the voter journey, filling the gap between registration and casting a ballot while helping voters - especially new voters - navigate the democratic process with confidence. LWVGY wants to help those registered to vote know about their candidates and issues and then feel confident when they go to cast a ballot in the 2023 elections.
Why do off-year elections matter?
Off-year elections offer communities a chance to elect leaders to represent them in everything from the municipal courts to their local school boards. In many places these elections offer the chance to re-shape the local governments that have the most impact on people’s day-to-day lives.
What are the key messaging themes for the Mahoning County Voter Guide?
- Awareness of the 2023 elections.
- Understanding of the candidates and issues on the ballot.
- A plan for where, when, and how to vote in this year’s election.
- Confidence in their ability to participate in this year’s elections and help others do the same.
What should we remember throughout promoting the Voter information Guide and VOTE411?
- Be Nonpartisan (i.e. no promoting one political party or candidate)
- Be Non-transactional (i.e. no pressuring or forcing anyone to read or access the voter guide)
- Be an Active Participant (i.e. share the link to the voter guide often)
- Keep Us Posted (i.e. tag us on social media)
- Champion Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (i.e. celebrate diversity and promote equity and empathy)
